Priceless Advice

August 26th, 2011 · 2 Comments

A young comedian sent the late, great Phil Hartman an audiotape of his work.  Hartman sent him back an encouraging letter that contained some of the wisest, simplest advice I've ever read:

Develop your craft…don't be discouraged…work wherever you can.  Be patient.

Great advice for anyone.  Perhaps our schools should work on this, instead of "globalization".

You can read the whole letter (and background) here.  I really miss Phil Harman.

That really is great advice, so is the part about schools.

I’d also add churches, workplaces and families to that list.

The more I read about Phil Hartman, the more convinced I am that he was a great man. Adam Carolla says that “if your reputation is that you’re a dick, you’re probably a dick. If everyone says your a great guy, you’re probably a great guy.” Everyone says Phil Harman was a mensch.

I teach my kids to not give up and to keep working if they want to improve. But sometimes it’s “what does Dad know”?

I may post a rant that clarifies the comments about schools teaching “globalization”. I just hope no one from their school reads it!
