Eastern Standard Tribes

January 14th, 2009 · No Comments

I’ve been reading Cory Doctorow’s Eastern Standard Tribes. Very enjoyable book. Not through with it yet, so no summary. There are hints of the Bitchun Society in the book (e.g., Whuffie), but it’s obviously set before Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom. More when I’m done; in the meantime, download it from Feedbooks and [...]

CarolinaConservatives.org – It Ain’t What You Think

January 12th, 2009 · No Comments

Well. if you’ve clicked the above link, you already know that it’s a site for NC Sate Senator Eddie Goodall. Nothing wrong with that; just not what one would [...]

When Will It End?

January 7th, 2009 · No Comments

I was flipping through the Charlotte Observer today at lunch, and I saw a headline about food labels. Seems that there will be “front-of-package” nutritional information on packaged food, starting this year. I rolled my eyes and went to the important part of the paper. The headline kept nagging at me, so when I got [...]

Man, it’s been a busy few weeks.  We’ve had visitors for the past three weekends.  It feels like we’re running a bed-and-breakfast!  The brother-in-law and a couple of friends came down the weekend before Thanksgiving.  My brother and his daughter came down for Thanksgiving weekend, and my wife’s cousins came down this past weekend.  Throw [...]

I went out this morning to take a few pictures.  Union County is mainly rural, but the growth around Charlotte has worked its way down (that’s how we ended up here).  We seem to be on the border of rural and semi-suburban.  Here are a couple of pictures:

A House Full of Greeks

November 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

Well, three Greeks and two Greek-Americans! My brother-in-law, two fo his friends, and the mom of one of the friends came down from NYC last night.  I made pork BBQ and ribs.  AISOT, the temperature was not high enough to get the pork “pullable”, so it ended up as sliced pork.  Made a vinegar sauce [...]

What’s so Interesting About a Pregnant (Wo)man?

November 21st, 2008 · No Comments

I didn’t have a blog when this was first in the news, but the morning shows, Ophrah, etc. are covering it again, so I’ve got another shot. A woman has a double mastectomy. She later has a baby (and then maybe another one). There’s nothing special or interesting about it (unless you’re the woman in [...]

A Busy Weekend

November 17th, 2008 · No Comments

I had a busy weekend.  Saturday started off with the usual cleaning chores (I get the bathrooms and vacuuming).  Fixed lunch, then the power went out.  I dug out the corded phone and plugged it in, while Val used her cell to check the power situation at our neighbors.  Sure enough, the whole subdiviion was [...]
